Workshops

How many legs? (30min - A.M Only)
This hands on animal encounter gives children a chance to meet some of Colchester Zoo's smaller residents. In this workshop they will be able to learn about what keeps an animal alive as well as some other interesting facts about the animals they encounter.

The workshop will usually include a rat, a guinea pig, an African land snail and a cockroach.

Maximum 30 children per session.

Animals and their Colours Workshop
Do you know why animals are brightly coloured? Do you know why others have stripes, spots or patches? Book this session to find out and have a chance to use different arts and crafts materials to camouflage a penguin in a rainforest!

Maximum 25 children per session

Sense-ations
All animals see, smell, taste, hear and feel things. This workshop is designed to show children how animals do this, whilst exploring our own senses at the same time. Book this workshop now to find out what animals have extreme senses.

Maximum 30 children per session

A Scarf for a Giraffe!
A poem about a giraffe owning and putting on a scarf! The children then have to decorate the scarf for the giraffe and discuss how it could be put on! Our own model giraffe neck can be used as a manikin to show off your class’ design! The children can then go down to the giraffe paddock and feed our giraffes.

Maximum 30 children per session

Story/Poetry Time

You’re too small
Meet Zamba our youngest member of the white rhino family here at Colchester Zoo. In this story time, the children will find out what mischief he gets up to during the day and his quest to find somebody or something to play with. After the story the children will then get the opportunity for a guided tour down to the paddock to see Zamba and the rest of the family!

Maximum 30 children per session
Session lasts 20 minutes

Story of the Savannah
It’s a hard life being the world’s tallest animal! Their height means that they are easy pickings - a tasty snack for a lion. This story is about the courage of one of our giraffes and a chance friendship he makes with a lioness! After this story, the children will then get the opportunity to have a guided tour to the featured animal’s paddocks/enclosures.

Maximum 30 children per session
Session lasts 20 minutes

Please note that all sessions are subject to availability
