Outreach Programme
Choose from one of the following activities offered by the Discovery and Learning Department to take place at your school at a time convenient to you.

All sessions are designed to give children the opportunity to get children closer to nature without leaving the classroom and can be used to provide an introduction to Colchester Zoo’s educational resources prior to a school visit. Sessions are available for both primary, secondary and higher students.

To discuss booking an Outreach programme, please contact our Education department on 01206 331292

Colour and Camouflage

Real animal skins are bought along to demonstrate the different colours and patterns of animals you see in the wild. Reasons why animals are camouflaged are discussed followed by a camouflage game for students to colour an animal in to blend in with its habitat.

This session is for primary groups.

UmPhafa, African Culture Workshop

This is a chance to learn about the Zulu culture through Colchester Zoo’s UmPhafa nature reserve. This interactive talk includes pictures, music and costumes. There is also a chance to design your very own Zulu shield at the end of the talk.

This session is for primary groups.

Adaptation to Habitats

An exploration into what it would be like to live in habitats such as polar regions, deserts, savannahs and rainforests. Animals from these areas are introduced and their adaptations to how they are built for their habitat are investigated.

This session is for all key stages.

Going, Going, Gone

Explore some of the reasons why animals are becoming threatened in the wild and what we can do to help them. After the talk there will be a touch table of animal artefacts including fur coats, skulls, tusks and snake skins to support the talk.

This session is for primary and secondary schools.

Dinner Time!

Why do animals eat and how? An overview of the three main dietary groups, what happens to food in your body and food chains. Animal skulls accompany the talk to show differentiation of teeth and our ‘Dung game’ never fails to amuse students and teachers alike.

This session is for primary and secondary schools.

Variation and Classification

This is an introduction as to why we like to group animals together and how we do it. Examples of grouping are demonstrated using the animal kingdom with a chance for students to group objects and encounter the problems scientist have when doing such an activity.

This session is for secondary and higher groups.

Zoos and Conservation

What is the purpose of a zoo and what do they do to help endangered animals? Breeding programmes and conservation projects which Colchester Zoo is part of are discussed.

This session is for secondary and higher groups.

Business, Leisure and Tourism

An overview as to how Colchester Zoo runs as a business. Finances, staff, marketing and customer services are explored. There is also a ‘Run the Zoo’ game to highlight budgets and decision making within the zoo.

This session is for Key Stage 4 and higher.
