Choose from any of these interesting and informative talks which take place at the relevant enclosures at Colchester Zoo. The talks enable pupils to find out more about the species concerned; giving them the opportunity to ask any questions as well.

These 10 to 25 minutes talks will enable pupils to find out more about the species concerned; giving them the opportunity to ask any questions as well. Availability throughout the day. These talks are suited for up to a maximum of 15 pupils at KS3+ and up to a maximum of 20 pupils at KS1/ KS2. |

‘A matter of chance’ At the White Tiger enclosure, there will be a talk about why these beautiful animals are not the ‘normal’ colour, what would happen to them in the wild, advantages and disadvantages about genetic mutations. There will also be a five minute window for asking questions. |

‘African explorers- life in a herd’ This will take place at the Kingdom of the Wild and the elephant paddocks and include the giraffes, white rhinos, zebra and elephants. It can be adapted for any age group covering topics such as what areas they are found in, group dynamics of each species and who’s dominant, the benefits of life together and the dangers they face in the wild. |

‘Big cats’ This talk will start at the Amur leopard enclosure, finishing at the Lion enclosure and can be adapted to suit any age group. It will cover topics such as distribution, adaptations and the threats to these animals in the wild. |

‘Bottle neck cheetahs’ A ten minute talk at the cheetah enclosure to discusses how cheetahs have not been fast enough to escape the ‘bottleneck’ situation they are now in. The talk briefly covers the four extinct species and the surviving species that are highly inbred both in the wild and captivity. An interpretation sign at the enclosure will help give visual learners a better understanding of this theory.
This encounter is only suitable for secondary schools and higher due to the content of the talk.

‘King of the swingers’ This talk will take place at the Orangutan enclosure and can be adapted to suit any age group. It will cover topics such as life in the trees, population distribution and the threats to this species in the wild. |

‘Leader of the pack’ This talk will start at the African hunting dogs and finish at the Timber wolves and can be aimed at all ages. The talk will discuss social hierarchy, communication and the threats to these species in the wild |

‘Life in the colony’ This talk will take place at the leaf cutter ants and can be adapted to suit any age group. The talk will discuss the types of ants in the colony and their role, how they feed and life in the wild. |
|
‘Marine mayhem’ This talk will start at the Sea lions and will end at the Humboldt penguins and can be adapted to suit any age group. The talk will discuss distribution, adaptations and the threats to these species in the wild. |
