Colchester Zoo is naturally hilly so the terrain
can be hard going for disabled visitors. For this reason the disabled
are charged a greatly reduced rate. Please display your blue badge
in your car in order to use the disabled parking area provided and
bring additional proof of disability in order to claim the disabled
rate at the entrance.

Access Information
The following facilities are available:-
- Disabled parking areas are available for blue badge holders
at the top end of the Zoo’s Car Parks. Blue Badges must
be properly displayed in accordance with regulations. Badges should
be displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle with the side showing
the wheelchair symbol facing forward.
- An Easier Route to ensure the easiest route possible around
Colchester Zoo for any wheelchair user or anyone with reduced
mobility. This is a yellow line to follow around the zoo’s pathways.
- All displays / keeper talks are accessible by wheelchair with
space available at the front of tiered seating if required. Please
just ask a member of staff for assistance.
- Audio information around the park for the visually impaired.
- The Wild about Animals Theatre and Kalahari Theatre are fitted
with induction loop hearing systems. Just switch your hearing
aid to T.
- Public telephones adapted for hard of hearing – just switch
to T on your hearing aid.
- Ample toilet facilities for the disabled in the park and restaurant.
- Manual wheelchair hire is available – Please phone 01206 331292
ext 227 to check availability. They can be booked on a first come,
first served basis in return for a £20 refundable deposit.
- Only Registered Assistance Dogs are allowed. Please see section
below if you are wishing to make a visit with a Registered Assistance
Dog
- Due to the steep hills it is not possible to hire electric scooters
but if you wish to, you use your own electric scooter at your
own risk. You just need to sign a disclaimer at the zoo entrance.
Visits with Registered Assistance Dogs Please
observe Colchester Zoo’s Code of Conduct for visits with Registered
Assistance Dogs.
- All Registered Assistance Dogs must be fully up to date with
any inoculations.
- Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times and under control.
- Dogs must not be allowed to foul the zoo’s pathways
If you are visiting with a registered assistance dog it is unfortunately
not possible to access the following areas:-
- The Birds of Prey display
- The Elephant or Giraffe Feeds
- Walk through enclosures where animals are free roaming including
Worlds Apart and South American Life.
Because of the steep hills in the Zoo we recommend that anyone
with a wheelchair or using an electric scooter follows the
‘Easier Route’.
Colchester Zoo’s Easier Route is recommended for all
pushchair and wheelchair users.
This route has been developed to give you the simplest route
possible around the zoo for those with limited mobility. This
avoids the steepest of the hills but due to the undulating ground
does have two stretches particularly that are “hard work”.
Please do ask for assistance if required. As by following this route
a few enclosures are inaccessible, there is a greatly reduced rate
for the registered disabled and for carers. The more mobile can
use the route for orientation around the zoo breaking away to visit
other enclosures.
