FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A herd of giraffes to arrive at Big Yellow as part of
Colchester Zoo celebrations
A storage company is preparing to welcome one of its most unusual packages yet – 82 giraffe sculptures which will be part of Colchester Zoo’s 50th birthday celebrations this summer.
The Big Yellow Self Storage Company is one of 30 local businesses sponsoring Stand Tall for Giraffes, in which a herd of 2.5m giraffe sculptures will be on display around Colchester for 12 weeks. These 30 giraffes have all been individually painted by artists whose designs were chosen from over 100 submissions.
Along with the large scale giraffes, 82 smaller sculptures have been painted by schools in the Colchester area - and will be stored at the Bruff Close warehouse from now until the launch of the campaign on June 2.
Big Yellow’s giraffe is called Love Hearts, whose design is the brainchild of Norfolk artist Samuel Thomas. Andy Polson, Manager at Big Yellow, said: “Love hearts cover the giraffe in a psychedelic and colourful style which is very appropriate given the zoo’s 1960s origins! The giraffe is going to be really eye-catching when it’s on display in the town this summer.”
The Stand Tall for Giraffes project is being run in partnership with art event specialist Wild in Art which has successfully staged similar events in other parts of the UK as well as in Europe and Africa. Event sponsors include Williams and Griffin, Eastern Lift Services, and Holiday Inn. After being on show, all of the giraffes will be auctioned off to raise money for the zoo’s charity Action for the Wild.
Colchester Zoo Director Anthony Tropeano said: “We’d like to give a big thanks to Big Yellow for storing our precious giraffes for us until they are ready to face the world in June. Stand Tall wouldn’t have got this far without the help of all our sponsors – we’re very grateful to each and every one of them for supporting us.”
