We are excited to announce the arrival of two red river hog piglets! Born on the 7th April to first time parents, Mum Charlie and Dad Piggles Jr, the duo have been doing extremely well with both parents being very attentive.
Back in April 2017 Dad Piggles Jr arrived at Colchester Zoo from Oklahoma Zoo in America, this makes these newborns particularly important as this birth has introduced a completely new blood line to the
Red river hogs such as ours have a bristly coat which can vary from reddish to greyish-brown with a white mane running down their backs. Piglets do have a different coat whilst they are young which is covered in spots and stripes, this slowly fades as they get older and begin to match their parents in colouring.
This species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List however their numbers are declining.
Stop by their enclosure at Edge of Africa and see if you can spot our new family.
