Colchester Zoo is continually reinvesting into the park with both the animals and visitors in mind.
Phase 3 of The Outpost Gift Shop is due to open mid-end September and offers visitors a modern, spacious and varied shopping experience with a number of unique gifts and souvenirs available. The final phase of the new gift shop will see the introduction of a Coffee Lounge providing visitors with a relaxing environment to enjoy a hot drink and a light bite whilst they wait for friends or family to arrive or to take the weight off their feet after their exploration before they set off on their journey home or simply just somewhere to visit to catch up with friends over a coffee. The Coffee Lounge and Gift Shop are both accessible without having to pay admission into the zoo therefore this will b a shopping and coffee lounge destination for all to enjoy not just zoo visitors.
Phase 2 of the new entrance is also underway with the Ticket Office structure being built; this building will link into the new Admissions building providing visitors with a more efficient entry into the park than previous years creating an enjoyable experience right from the start. This building is due to open Easter 2020 and will be the completion of the investment into our new entrance to the zoo.
Moving into the park, the Rainbow lorikeet aviary – Australian Rainbows, is currently closed until mid October as the aviary receives some essential maintenance including interior design improvements which both the lorikeets and visitors will benefit from, when reopened this will have a fresh new look!
Penguin Shores is due a complete redevelopment therefore it will be closed for approximately 6 months. Penguin Shores is an enclosure which is over 20yrs old now and although still one of the most popular enclosures, Colchester Zoo feel it is due a refresh. The penguins will remain visible at the Inca Trail enclosure as they join the other group of Humboldt Penguins whilst this work takes place. Once complete this area will be unrecognisable and offer a new home to our group of Humboldt penguins providing a new filtration system and environment for them to live in along with a brand-new viewing area for visitors to watch the penguins swim underwater too!
We are currently in the planning process of a new Education Centre. As a result of our popular free education programme that we offer and school visits throughout the year. The design of a purpose-built facility is underway to provide an improved experience for students from Primary up to those in Further Education. This is subject to planning consent.
We are always making improvements to our facilities; we are due to begin the development of a new toilet facility near to our wolves and tigers as an additional toilet facility available for them during their visit.
It is hoped that all of these developments will further enhance visitors experience. To keep you in the know, we will update our website and social media with news and progress of these developments.
