Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
Distribution: Guinea and Ghana in West Africa, across to Tanzania in the east.
Status: Endangered and listed on Appendix I of CITES.
Chimpanzee Lookout has a large group of Chimps. They are all individuals, with totally different facial features and behavioural characteristics, therefore they can be told apart quite easily.
Currently there are 8 Chimps in Chimpanzee Lookout, 3 males and 5 females. To identify males from females you just need to look at their bottoms, as the females are the ones with the bigger bottoms. When a female comes into season her bottom increases in size.
Our Chimps are part of the ESB (European Studbook Programme) breeding programme
