Following the move of our Patas monkeys to their new enclosure in September 2018, work is underway to develop a much larger area for our pygmy hippos, both inside and outside, as well as the addition of a large aquarium for a number of new fish species.
The inside area is now complete and the hippos have been enjoying spending time in their revamped home. The space is much larger for the hippos and also allows more space for the keepers behind the scenes. Large glass windows have been introduced and the enclosure has been designed with more enrichment facilities such as logs, rockwork and wires to allow the keepers to hang food for the hippos.
In addition to these changes inside, our maintenance team have also adjusted the old outdoor Patas monkey area to give the hippos additional outside space. This space will be revamped in the near future to create an additional pool facility for the hippos.
