Colchester Zoo is excited to announce the birth of four smooth-coated otter pups! The pups were born on the 17th May to mum Chea and dad Kong-Kea who have both been very attentive.  The littles ones spent their first few weeks in the underground den until their eyes opened at around 4 weeks old.

When the pups first arrived some visitors were given a rare treat when the older siblings within our group were trying to give mum and dad a break and were seen bringing the pups to the surface a little too early!

Since then the pups have been spending more and more time above ground and have even had their first swimming lessons! They are taught by being picked up by the scruff of the neck and dunked into the water, this may been a little rough but the pups are extremely buoyant and this is very natural behaviour!

The smooth-coated otter is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List 2004 due to the loss of suitable habitat.

Why not see if you can spot our pups down at Otter Creek!
