UPDATE: Our hoglets have been named! We would like to introduce our male hoglets, Mbili, Tatu and Nne, and our female hoglet, Maimoona.

Back in 2021 our two adult warthogs, Hermione and Moja became first time parents to two adorable piglets. Fast forward a year later and our warthog family has expanded again by four! On 5th April, our Animal Care Team awoke to the joyful news that our female warthog, Hermione, gave birth to four healthy piglets.

Since their welcomed arrival, the team have been able to assess the health of the piglets whilst confirming that Hermione was a proud mum to three males and one female. Our adorable piglets are awaiting names but our Animal Care Team are currently thinking of what to name the siblings!

This is Hermione and Moja’s second litter after successfully rearing two piglets born in March 2021. Hermione arrived at Colchester Zoo in October 2019 from Munster Zoo, whilst Moja was born at Colchester Zoo in June 2014. Both Hermione and Moja are once again proving to be excellent parents. The four piglets have already grown in confidence and exploring their new home. They can often be found enjoying the sunshine with older siblings Zuma and Zuri.

Warthogs are currently listed as ‘Least Concern’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Why not see if you can spot the new arrivals on your next visit at the Edge of Africa

DID YOU KNOW… Warthog babies are very sensitive to cold and wet. Here at the Zoo they sleep on a raised bed at the back of the burrow or on top of their mother!
