‘Summer’ has arrived for male Otter Ravi!

Asian short-clawed otter, Ravi, has been without a companion since his previous otter friend, Priya sadly passed away in April 2020.

On the 3rd August 2020 we were pleased to welcome a new female Asian short-clawed otter named Summer to Colchester Zoo. After a few days of settling in, Summer was introduced to Ravi and the 2 have become very good friends.

Summer and Ravi explore!

Summer is 2 years old and was very nervous when she first arrived but as she spends more time with Ravi she is beginning to come out of her shell and particularly loves playing in the pool.

As Summer watches Ravi happily interacting with the Animal Care Team she is gaining more confidence and it is clear that Ravi is smitten, happily leading the way as the pair wander the enclosure together.

Asian short-clawed otters such as our pair are the smallest of all otter species and as the name suggests, they also have the smallest claws. Summer and Ravi are similar in size, with Summer being on the more slender side and Ravi lighter in colouration.

This species of otter live in rivers, marshes and shallow estuaries and is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red list.

It is lovely to watch this new pairing blossom and we hope it will last for many years to come!
