Feathers of the Forest

At the end of 2020, our Victoria Crowned Pigeon family moved into their new home, ‘Feathers of the Forest’.

This fantastic area, which was previously Butterfly Glade, has been adapted to make a wonderful walkthrough area that allows great views of these striking birds!

Our Victoria Crowned Pigeon family is made up of mum Violet, Dad Ozzy along with their male offspring Barry who hatched in 2019 and a female, Sonya, who hatched in 2020! They have all been busy exploring, selecting new nest sites, and enjoying the chance to see visitors up closer than ever before!

Victoria Crowned Pigeons are the largest of all living pigeons and are monogamous, mating for life. They have a large crest of feathers on their head that can be raised out like a fan – hence their name, crowned pigeon!

Pigeons, together with flamingos are unusual among birds in that they produce milk to feed their chicks which forms the complete diet of nestlings during the first few days of their life.

In such a short space of time, the whole family have become very comfortable in their new home and now that our indoor areas are open once again, we hope our visitors will enjoy seeing them up close and perhaps welcome more chicks in the future!
